About the Muddy Stilettos Awards
The Muddy Stilettos Awards celebrate the best local businesses across the UK, as voted by the people who know them best: their local communities. With the Best Salon category being one of the most hotly contested, our back-to-back wins make this achievement all the more special.

Brendan named Male Hairstylist Of The Year 2022 by Darkus Magazine
Brendan has been styling for Darkus Magazine for several years and is responsible for creating hair for many Darkus front covers. “I’m delighted to be given this award. I love working with Darkus, the wonderful talent they feature, and the incredible creatives who make up the shoot team.”
Darkus is a music, fashion and lifestyle magazine that say, “The annual Darkus Awards are a chance to relive the special moments we’ve had as a magazine and pay tribute to some of the amazing and inspirational people we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with.”
Cover features that Brendan has worked on for Darkus include talents such as Nicola Coughlan, Hayley Squires, Darci Shaw, Bellsavvy and Rika.
In addition to session styling, Brendan is a successful salon owner alongside his business partner Wendy Higgins. Their salon, Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty, has been the leading salon in Amersham for over 17 years, recognised for exceptional service, team development and creative vision.

The Fellowship of British Hairdressing at Salon International 2021
We’ve always had our roots (pardon the pun) firmly planted in education and have been proud members of the Fellowship of British Hairdressing for many years. The Fellowship helps focus on artistic and creative quality and provides support for future hairdressing talent – values that are so meaningful to us. Jack has served on the Fellowship Project X Team and Brendan is a Fellow with Honours.
We’re proud that our Artistic Director Leanne is through to the finals of the F.A.M.E Team (Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence) an initiative created to nurture, encourage, and promote an elite group of young, up and coming hairdressers.
Leanne was recently (and very bravely!) performing on The Fellowship Stage during a jam-packed Salon International Exhibition at Excel, London as part of the F.A.M.E project. Always one for creativity, Leanne presented her galactic duo of Avant Garde sputnik style hair-up and stunning colour
“My vision was space-inspired. I balayaged from the dark roots to the ends creating a soft blend, then used colours from the galaxy – blue, green, purple, and colour-melted them together. It looks vivid, strong and powerful, just like the universe.”
There was a rapturous reaction from the crowd, and whatever the results of the F.A.M.E team are in December, we’re confident Leanne has a great future ahead of her.
Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty receive award for Customer Experience
“Our team are over the moon to once again be the recipients of a Client Experience Award based on consistency of Five Star reviews over the year. We’re involved in many industry and fashion features, however, we consider customer feedback to be the biggest reward of all. Our goal at Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty has always been to deliver a personal experience that makes every customer look and feel fantastic, and it’s a privilege to look after our customers. We are so grateful to all our wonderful customers who have taken the time to leave us a review”.
“Aman listened to what I wanted but was also able to advise with her professional expertise. She didn’t just cut my hair & say she was done, she wanted to make sure I left happy with my cut and seeing as I‘d never been to her before, we managed to natter away like we’d known each other for years. All-in-all, a lovely salon experience”
“Always a genuinely great, calm and extremely efficient experience. Everyone is so friendly, calm and very professional. Best haircut/colour too, so I’ve been loyally going for many years and won’t move.”
“Jack is exceptionally talented. A highly creative and able hairdresser. He has been doing my hair for years and I totally trust him to do a great job and make any suggestions that will suit me best. And a great person to know”
“Leanne is amazing! Always puts 100% into her work. She is attentive, creative, thorough and entirely lovely with it! I always look forward to getting my hair done at Brendan O’Sullivan.”
Fundraising in the community: supporting Chiltern Foodbank
“Over the years we’ve enjoyed helping a variety of local charity events, it’s good to support the community. With the recent lack of local occasions due to Covid we’ve taken the decision to get involved with fundraising for the Chiltern Food Bank, they do amazing work supplying food parcels to local people in crisis.
Our fundraising kicked off with a Charity Raffle as part of our salon 16 Year Anniversary celebrations in September, and we’ve had amazing support from our wonderful customers. There were three very special prizes for the lucky winners and we are delighted to have raised to date £462 for Chiltern Foodbank.
We will continue to support Chiltern Foodbank and look forward to announcing our next fundraising event soon.”
16 Years of Brendan O'Sullivan Hair and Beauty
On the 16th Anniversary of his salon, Brendan O’Sullivan shares his thoughts on Customer Relationships, Fashion and Education.
“We decided to recognise this particular business milestone as we’re so grateful for the amazing support our customers showed us through the recent lockdowns. The team and I think it’s a great time to celebrate and reward our loyal VIPs.
We really do consider ourselves lucky. When my partner Wendy and I decided Amersham was the best place to open our salon all those years ago we had no idea what a great decision it was. In fact, we loved Amersham so much we moved here! We are privileged to look after wonderful customers and although some travel nationally and internationally to us, most are from Amersham and the surrounding areas, we really do appreciate each client who supports our salon. Amersham is such a pretty town with a strong community and boasts many independent businesses. With great places to shop, fabulous cafes, restaurants, and bars (and of course our salon!) Amersham is a special place to spend time.
I think the main reason our business has thrived for 16 years is high standards. We don’t take anything for granted and look ahead to see how we can improve and always make our clients look and feel fantastic. When you’ve been in business a while it’s great to see customers grow with you, some we’ve seen off to university, helped with their interview image when they’ve applied for jobs, styled them into their career and it’s wonderful to help develop their look as we go along. Trends change, fashion changes and we change with our clients over the years.
We have a reputation for excellent customer service, it’s important to us. No matter how many times they’ve been to us, we look at clients like it’s the first time – their face shape, hair texture, give advice about what would suit them, how to manage their style and achieve the look at home.
In 16 years, we’ve seen many changes with hair trends, I love how fashion is cyclical but always with a new twist such as the current Seventies vibe. Of course, Mullets, Shags and Bangs have been seen before but each time around we bring them up to date with new translations and techniques. We work at Fashion Week in London, Paris, Milan, New York - we’re not just following trends but creating them, and we bring new trends back to the salon. Fashion will never stop evolving and our clients know we can deliver something bang on trend when they visit. Some people believe that you must travel into London to find a salon that understands fashion trends or great service and we want everyone to know we can deliver those things right here in Amersham.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing the return of some shorter, more creative haircuts and have to say one of my favourite hair colour trends has to be balayage; it’s such a great opportunity for stylists to get creative, visual, to paint the hair and work with toners to make hair look stunning. Creative colour is so popular with our customers right now.
Wendy and I have a background in education, for 15 years I was Head of Training for the largest hairdressing company in the world, so we know how important it is to keep providing the team with a fresh view, keep motivation and standards high. When you strive to be the best, training doesn’t ever stop - you continue to learn throughout your career. We also develop our team by encouraging them to enter competitions. Leanne (one of our Senior Stylists) has just reached the finals of the F.A.M.E Team for the Fellowship of British Hairdressing, we’re absolutely thrilled! The F.A.M.E Team (Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence) is an annual initiative created to nurture, encourage, and promote an elite group of young, up and coming creative hairdressers.
Over the years we’ve enjoyed helping a variety of local charity events, it’s good to support the community. With the recent lack of local occasions due to Covid we’ve taken the decision to get involved with fundraising for the Chiltern Food Bank, they do amazing work supplying food parcels to local people in crisis.
Business can be tough, particularly during recent times with the challenges we’ve all faced with the pandemic. But after many years in hairdressing, my partner Wendy and I still find the industry fascinating and are passionate about our customers and team and this will never change.
The team at Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty enjoyed our 16th celebrations throughout September and most importantly, we had the most amazing reactions from our customers who loved the Gift Vouchers we shared and indulged in celebratory prosecco and cupcakes. There was an extra special buzz in the salon. Although business will always have its ups and downs we’re proud of our accomplishments over the last 16 years and super excited about the future.”
Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty celebrated its 16th anniversary throughout the month of September 2021. Anniversary activities included a Birthday Card with Gift Voucher to all customers visiting in September, 16-day luxury giveaway on Instagram, special anniversary salon refreshments menu and celebratory cupcakes, sharing a curated playlist of foot-tapping tunes, and a prize draw for local charity Chiltern Food Bank raising £460.
Flying Solo NYC at Paris Fashion Week
Following the success of London Fashion Week, Brendan flew off to Paris as Lead Hair for the Flying Solo NYC show. Using Unite Hair products, Brendan and his team produced elegant looks inspired by braiding techniques, embellished with beautiful hair jewellery. Simple yet stunning, these looks would adapt brilliantly for Christmas and New Year parties for clients with long hair. Unite Hair products that helped create the look were Expanda Dust, Blow & Set Lotion and GO365 Hairspray.
Vin + Omi ‘Future Flowers’ London Fashion Week Show
Brendan was Lead Hairstylist at the Vin + Omi ‘Future Flowers’ London Fashion Week show at The Dorchester, 21st September 2021. No less than 50 models were walking (dancing or running!) including Jo Wood and Olympians Hannah Williams, Marcus Mempstead, Joe Choong and Stephanie Twell.
“This was such an exciting collection to work on, Vin + Omi designs are works of art and hair needed to be both spectacular and respectful of the sustainability values which Vim + Omi hold close to their hearts.
We referenced the Future Flowers theme with an Avant Garde perspective, always bearing sustainability in mind. Vin + Omi do inspirational research into how they can work with nature and leave the planet as undisturbed as possible and to align with this we used every day (but unusual for session work) materials such as fruit nets and protectors recycled from greengrocers and supermarkets, recycled cardboard, and old clothing. We even used recycled fashion pieces from Vin + Omi previous collections such sheepskin, wool, re-purposed building foam to create spectacular headpieces. It’s made me think about how I could use materials already to hand to achieve high fashion looks.
The looks were a celebration of how you can be sustainable during London Fashion Week, and a collaboration between the designers and hair team. We worked with Vin + Omi on ideas and mood boards, bringing the vision to life.
There’s such a great choice of products in the KMS range to help me and my team create the looks for this show. And of course, the new Conscious Styling products and GO Solid shampoo fit perfectly with the values behind the show.
I love all the looks but think my favourite must be Gravity Defying Ponytail – It’s simple yet such a contrast to expectations when you imagine a ponytail. I love the bluntness of the brow-skimming fringe.”
Brendan O’Sullivan talks Autumn Hair Trends
“As we approach Autumn the trends in the salon seem a little more daring. With the seventies influences we’re seeing this year, cutting is becoming more creative with more customers requesting a shorter, precision cut.
Styling product innovation has been exceptionally good recently which sits well with the trend for texture. Whatever style you choose, texture is a big trend for Autumn and great styling products help create the look.
Short to long - Buzz, Pixie, Mixie, Mullet, Wolf – which one’s for you?
Whatever length you prefer, these styles work brilliantly with the texture and layers trend, they are so wearable. A great haircut, colour for emphasis and the right products make them easy to style and wear, plus they can be dressed up or worn more casually. Key products for these textured styles are Liquid Volume by Unite Hair for texture and weightless volume, while TEXTURIZER Spray by Unite Hair is perfect for an undone textured look.
For our very daring customers, the Buzz cut in a bold fashion colour is a real statement and so easy to maintain.
The choppy Pixie cut is updated with texture and movement, it’s really easy to wear.
The Mixie is a Pixie/Mullet hybrid, longer than a pixie and slightly softer than a traditional mullet shape.
The Mullet is still very much on-trend for Autumn and it’s great to see how many variations there are now.
And for the adventurous long-haired client, we love the Wolf cut which keeps length at the back but has chopped into, sliced layers to remove weight.
Bob, French Bob, Lob
The bob is always in fashion and we love how the shape evolves with time. A chic, short French Bob
is becoming very popular, worn with movement in the hair and perhaps some waves or flicks for extra style. We’re being asked to do nineties style bobs with a middle or side parting quite frequently, updated with creative colouring techniques to personalise the look. And the Lob long bob remains as popular as ever, easy to wear up or down and looks fabulous with artistic colour such as balayage to really emphasise movement. Key products for these bob styles are Tecniart Liss Control by L’Oreal for a smooth, sleek blowdry and for a high gloss finish, Unite Hair Smooth&Shine cream. To hold waves and flicks, try Unite Hair Session-Max finishing spray.
The Shag and Curly Shag
Whether soft or shorter layers, the Shag is such a versatile style and for Autumn we have the Curly Shag with a fringe to give a squarer shape. Chopped-into layers create weightlessness, volume and movement and with the correct styling products you can just blast-dry and go. Key products to support the look are Tecniart Density Material for volume, texture and hold and Tecniart Savage Panache spray for exceptional volume with a dishevelled, texturised finish.
The Shag and Curly Shag
2021 Has been all about fringes and this is set to continue – curtain, mod, wisp, 70s flick, and particularly a fringe that is shorter in the centre going longer towards the edges. Think Farah-Fawcett, Debbie Harry, Margot Robbie. Depending on the type of fringe we can either create a soft, face-framing style or dramatic impact with something like baby bangs contrasted with a one-length bob. Key products for these looks are Elevate Mousse by Unite Hair for a full-bodied style with shine and movement, 7Seconds Blowout Crème by Unite Hair for a smooth, shiny finish and GO365 Hairspray by Unite Hair for soft, medium or strong hold – the choice is yours!”
